Veeam Remote Access – Not just for service providers…

Veeam introduced some cool new features for service providers in Veeam 9.5 update 2, namely the Remote Access for Veeam Backup and Replication Console and Remote Desktop. A full breakdown of these features can be found here https://www.veeam.com/blog/msps-remote-access-backup-replication-9-5-update-2.html . Now although this is geared towards service providers to be able to offer remote assistance for their customers there is nothing stopping a customer using this feature as long as they have a subscription with a Veeam Cloud Service Provider. Let me explain below;

If you have ever looked at the Veeam Console shortcut you may have noticed a bunch of switches are set when the application is launched. To launch remote console feature it is just another switch -TenantRemoteAccess . The left shows a standard shortcut, the right shows the modified shortcut.

If you launch the Veeam Console with this switch you will be greeted with the following

Click the not set button. There are 2 different options to connect to a tenant. One is to connect to local service provider Veeam infrastructure OR you can connect via your service providers cloud gateway which you are using already to use cloud connect backup or cloud connect replication.

Choose the Through cloud gateway option

You will now have the choice of which server you would like to connect to, which should be your Veeam Backup and Replication server.

Type in your AD credentials to connect and bingo, you can access your Veeam Backup and Replication console anywhere that has internet connectivity!

Now I would like to caveat this and say this is probably not this products intended use and by default this functionality is not enabled on the tenant side. You have to enable remote control for the service provider from within the service provider setup on the tenant side. Interesting none the less.
