2018 Learning Objectives

What has prompted this?

Now that Stranger Things is out of the way (I know right, have to wait for season 3), I am going to build a plan for learning objectives and goals I would like to achieve throughout 2018. Over the course of 2017, I have been very fortunate to be able to attend some great industry events and influencer program type stuff including VeeamON, Tech Field Day, DockerCon EU, and local and national VMUG events to name a few. Along the way, I have met some awesome people and gained valuable insights into a lot of different technology stacks and how these people make use of those technologies. My eyes have been opened to just how little I actually know! I have heard this a few times, there is the stuff you know, the stuff you know you don’t know and the stuff you don’t know you don’t know. I want to uncover some of stuff I don’t know I don’t know.

I am an inherent tinkerer, but that flame has been burning dimly recently. I am hoping to stoke the fire and see it roaring brighter than ever.

What tech has caught my attention?

It’s not necessarily a specific application technology I want to learn more about but an overall technology stack. What I have come to realise though, is to realise some of these learning goals I am going to have to put in some groundwork to be able to achieve these goals. So what on earth am I talking about? To give one example I would like to put some work into expanding my knowledge of containers. To be able to do this the way I want to though I need to have some kind of infrastructure to run this on. So I need to build the infrastructure before looking at containers for example.

To this end, this is the list of high levels goals I have.

Now this list is not exhaustive and to be honest I don’t even know if what I’m proposing is even possible the way I am hoping to achieve this. It does look like a good list of future blog posts though 🙂

Why are you wasting your own time fool?

Well, I don’t think it is a waste of time. I am planning to work on all of this outside of work hours. I feel if you don’t invest time in your self then you are not going to better yourself. The list of items above don’t quite fall into my day job but do compliment them. Being able to hold a sensible conversation with tech people about different technology stacks is important to me as well as pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. Let’s see where 2018 gets me!
